How to Find Peace When You Don’t Know What’s Next

There are seasons in life when you feel like you should know what comes next- but you simply don’t. Maybe you’re trying to figure out your career. Maybe you’re wondering whether you should make a big change. Maybe you’re waiting for an answer, a relationship, a financial breakthrough, or clarity about where God is leading you.

And if you’re anything like me, uncertainty can make you want to figure everything out immediately. But what if peace doesn’t come from knowing what’s next? What if peace comes from knowing Who holds what’s next?

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

We live in a world that constantly tells us to have a plan.

Have a five-year plan. Set your goals. Know your next move. Build your career. Figure out your purpose. Planning can be helpful, but sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to know exactly where we’re going that we forget we were never promised the entire roadmap. As Christians, we are called to trust God- not because we know exactly what He is doing, but because we know who He is.

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Sometimes seeking God’s will doesn't mean receiving a complete blueprint for your life. Sometimes it means trusting Him with the next step.

Peace Doesn't Mean You Have No Questions

Finding peace doesn't mean you suddenly stop wondering what will happen.

You can trust God and still have questions.

You can have faith and still feel nervous.

You can believe God is working and still wish He would give you the answer a little sooner.

Peace isn't the absence of uncertainty. It's learning that uncertainty doesn't have to control you. Instead of constantly asking, “What is going to happen?” try asking: “God, what are You asking me to do today?” That question brings your focus back to what you can actually do.

Stop Trying to Solve the Future

One of the easiest ways to lose your peace is to spend all of your energy trying to solve problems that haven't happened yet.

What if this doesn't work out? What if I make the wrong decision? What if I'm behind? What if I miss what God has for me? What if I choose the wrong path?

Those questions can keep you stuck in a cycle of fear and overthinking. But you don't have to live in tomorrow. You can live faithfully today.

Take the step in front of you. Have the conversation. Apply for the job. Start the business. Rest. Pray. Set the boundary. Make the decision you have enough information to make. And then trust God with what you cannot control.

Remember What God Has Already Done

When you don't know what's next, look back before you look too far ahead.

Think about the moments when you didn't know how something would work out- and yet it did. Think about the doors God opened. The situations He redirected. The prayers He answered. The things you once worried about that eventually became part of your testimony.

Remembering God's faithfulness can change the way you approach your uncertainty. You may not know what He's doing right now, but that doesn't mean He isn't working. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves: “I have been here before. God was faithful then, and He will be faithful now.”

You Can Take the Next Step Without Knowing the Whole Plan

I think we sometimes believe we need clarity before we can move. But clarity often comes while we're moving.

You may not know where the next opportunity will lead. You may not know exactly what your career will look like five years from now. You may not know who will be part of your future. You may not know how a difficult season will end.

That's okay.

You don't need to know the whole plan to take the next faithful step. God can guide you one step at a time. And sometimes that is exactly how He teaches us to trust Him.

Give Yourself Permission to Be in the In-Between

There is a lot of pressure to rush through seasons of uncertainty. We want answers. We want closure. We want the next chapter to begin.

But there can be purpose in the in-between. Maybe this is a season where God is growing your patience. Maybe He's teaching you to surrender control. Maybe He's preparing you for something you aren't ready for yet. Maybe He's changing your heart before He changes your circumstances. Or maybe you simply need to learn that your peace doesn't have to depend on having everything figured out.

You are allowed to be in the middle of the story. You are allowed to not know. You are allowed to trust God while you wait.

What If Peace Is the Next Step?

If you don't know what's next right now, take a breath. You don't have to figure out your entire life today. Pray about what is in front of you. Ask God for wisdom. Pay attention to where He may be leading. Take the next step you feel called to take.

And then release the need to know everything that comes after it. Your life doesn't have to make perfect sense for God to be working in it.

You don't have to know the whole plan. You just have to trust the One who does.

And if you're in a season where you're struggling to find clarity, confidence, or direction, you don't have to navigate it alone. Sometimes having someone to help you process what you're feeling can make the next step a little clearer.

Wherever you are right now, remember this:

God is not asking you to figure out everything at once. He is asking you to trust Him with the next step. 🤍

With love,

Cecilia
